Charity & Fundraising

One of the key reasons the IWCB was founded was to undertake charitable work. Specifically one of the Club’s aims is;

To assist selected charity groups financially and encourage our members to engage in charitable action.

The Club does this through voluntary community based work (Charity Spotlight) and fundraising activities that take place throughout the year. This money is available in the IWCB Charity Fund for Slovak charities and non-profit organisations to apply for. Scroll down to find out how to apply.

We proudly support a wide array of non-profit organisations in Slovakia.

Our Impact

In the past 10 years, the Club has helped over 300 organisations across the country. Our aim is to support humanitarian causes and help advocate for the less privileged groups in Slovak society. We work with organisations ranging from homeless shelters and orphanages to medical facilities and palliative care centres. We help Slovak charities by offering them the opportunity to apply for a grant from our Charity Fund. We encourage our members and organisations in our networks to engage in charitable action.

We are so grateful for all your help.

Some of the organisations we have supported

Here is what our support has meant to a handful of organisations who either applied for financial assistance or received hands on help.

Thanks to this platform, many things will change for the better... It might look like it is just “one platform”, but this platform will enable us to take a big step ahead in child care we provide.
— Mr. Gyurke, Centrum Director

Centrum pre deti a rodiny Bratislava, Röntgenova were the focus of our Flash Mob fundraiser in September 2021. We’re proud to say sufficient funds were raised to facilitate the purchase of an essential piece of equipment that will improve the wellbeing of children in their care.

The installation of an electro-hydraulic platform into their van, has removed daily challenges and improved the safety and comfort of both the children and staff.

You have helped many people in terminal stage of their disease.
— Simeon Centrum

The Charity Committee was pleased to approve a donation to Simeon Centrum hospice to support them with some much-needed equipment.

Their director wrote to thank the IWCB: "Thank you for your grant....[with which we bought]....an oxygen condenser, a nasal cannula, glucometer with accessories and disinfection tools. All these things will be used for our dying patients and their families, which look after them in domestic environment. You have helped many people in terminal stage of their disease, who thanks to help of the mobile hospice do not have to die in cold and impersonal environment of the hospitals, lonely, fighting till the last breath for every next minute of life, irrespective of the quality of their lives".

A huge thank you for your support, it was great to see how much other people can feel also for the people in need in times that were hard for everyone.
— Odyseus, Bratislava

Last year’s Covid Emergency Support Fund helped Odyseus, a Bratislava charity which supports vulnerable communities (including drug users and sex workers), half of whom were homeless at the time.

Our funding enabled their project workers to purchase masks, gloves and disinfectant for their clients living on the street – with nowhere to self isolate, this equipment was their only protection. The outreach workers supporting clients on the street also benefitted from the hygiene equipment.

We are very grateful that IWCB helped us to make this [our work] more possible.
— Karina Andrášiková, social worker, Mládež ulice

This Bratislava based charity supports families, children and young people from socially disadvantaged backrounds with social services within the community. Last year they opened a new youth club in Rača to give young people a safe place to spend time, get involved in activities, and receive tutoring if necessary. The club also acts as a base for counselling sessions for families, and an art therapy centre. We were happy to support the new centre with a range of equipment and furniture.

“The main part of our work is to be here for our clients and provide them our services. We are team of social workers so our presence, our experiences, our ability to build relationships with kids are the most important. But there is always a huge help when we can have tools and materials that make our work easier, more comfortable and more attractive for teenagers. We would like to have youth club as a safe and open space for all of the kids who want to spend their free time here, meet with friends or meet a new people, seek for support and help from the professionals and relax. We are very grateful that IWCB helped us to make this more possible.”

We have received a lot of support from you..... not only the money but your presence, your words, your interest. It means that I as a person and our organisation is not alone...
— Bc. Hana Kozmonová - PLAMIENOK n.o.

Plamienok is an organisation that gives the ability to dying children, and those with incurable conditions, to remain at home instead of being hospitalised. Their services improve the quality of life both for the child and the family. Plamienok also helps to raise society’s awareness and sensitivity towards the challenging topics such as life and death, love and grief and help and freedom at the end of life.

The Charity Committee recently approved Plamienok’s application of 3000 Eur for the purchase of a blood gas anaylzer. The equipment will enable staff to measure blood gases, helping their medical doctor make an adequate decision about medical treatment at home. If their blood gases are normal the child can stay at home removing the need to send them to hospital.

I want to thank you very much and express our gratitude for helping the homeless people together with us.
— Katarina Jurikova, DePaul Slovensko

A very big thank you to the British International School Bratislava for the amazing donation of clothes for our DEPAUL SLOVENSKO clothing collection. There was so much we had to take two trips to pick up 20 very large blue bags! As always our fantastic members matched this generousity with a great selection of shoes and clothing. Depaul were extremely grateful and we think a little surprised at the amount of bags we dropped off!

Clothing is very important for homeless people for several reasons. In winter season it serves as a thin layer between survival and death. A less obvious reason is that many times clothing can help homeless people to blend into the society, become less different from everybody else, which is all the more so important when they apply for job or they need to visit some administrative office. What is a daily routine for us, can become a huge mission for them. Thank you for helping these people with the collections and making their daily battles easier.

We value you as people with a Big Heart, who also take the “others” as part of our society, understand their difficulties, joys, dreams and hidden desires, which not everyone will understand and support
— Zita Záhorská, teacher, Spojená škola Zlaté Moravce

Spojená škola Zlaté Moravce is a school for children with learning disabilities, situated in the district of Nitra. They applied for funding for five ‘kinetic panels’ for their playground, which would allow their pupils to practise valuable motor skills in a stimulating and interactive way. The new outdoor multisensory environment diversifies teaching and improves leisure activities for all children in the facility so that they can deepen their knowledge and skills and make meaningful use of their time

We were very pleased to support this request, and the panels were made by a local carpenter to the school’s specification last year.
